Preventing Cigarette-ignited Fatal Residential Fires

The cigarette is the #1 cause of residential fire deaths.

The Trauma Foundation started a campaign in 1978 to prevent these tragedies by changing the cigarette.

Today, 49 states have passed legislation. It requires that cigarette manufacturers certify that their product passes an ASTM cigarette flammability test before it is sold in the states where the law has taken effect. Below is the standard identifying mark on the package of cigarettes. (It actually stands for "fire standards compliant".)
